Seymour Solar Helios Glass Slip-On Solar Filter – Telescope, Spotting Scope, and Camera Lens Accessory

Description

Observe the Sun with exceptional clarity using the Helios Glass Slip-On Solar Filter by Seymour Solar. Built with precision titanium-coated optical glass, this ND5 white-light filter blocks 99.999% of sunlight while delivering a sharp, high-contrast solar image in a clean yellow/orange tone. Perfect for viewing sunspots, eclipses, and planetary transits with telescopes, spotting scopes, and camera lenses when correctly installed on suitable equipment.

Key Features

  • Premium Titanium-Coated Glass: Stable, high-contrast solar views with excellent limb sharpness and surface detail.
  • ND5 Optical Density: Reduces sunlight by a factor of 100,000, bringing the Sun’s brightness into a range suitable for front-mounted white-light solar observation when the filter is properly installed.
  • Slip-On Aluminum Cell: Precision-assembled in the USA; mounts securely over the front of your optic within the specified outer-diameter range.
  • Compatible With: Telescopes, spotting scopes, and camera lenses that fall within the supported OD range.
  • Durable & Repeatable: Rigid glass substrate preserves optical figure and contrast over years of use.

What You’ll See

  • Sunspots — including umbra, penumbra, and light bridges
  • Solar granulation and surface texture
  • The Moon’s silhouette during partial and annular eclipses
  • Transits of Mercury and Venus (when visible)

Material Characteristics

Helios Glass (Titanium-Coated): Produces a crisp yellow/orange solar image with strong contrast and stable sharpness across the field. Ideal for visual observers and solar photographers who want consistent, repeatable white-light results.

Sizing & Fit

This filter slips over the front of your optic for a depth of approximately 1 inch (25 mm). Measure the outer diameter (OD) of the front end of your telescope, spotter, or camera lens—accounting for any flare or wider section within the first inch—and choose the filter size whose OD range includes your measurement.

Use our Sizing Guide to find your exact fit.

Safety Information

Helios Glass ND5 filters are designed for front-mounted white-light solar observation on appropriate optical instruments. These are not eclipse glasses and are not certified under ISO 12312-2 (which applies solely to eyewear). Always attach the filter securely before aiming your optic at the Sun.

  • Inspect the filter before each use and do not use it if the glass or coating appears cracked, chipped, or damaged.
  • Confirm that the slip-on cell fits firmly and cannot be dislodged by light pressure or a gust of wind.
  • Do not use this filter as a handheld viewer or place it directly in front of your eyes.

FAQs

  • Can I use this for solar eclipses?
Yes — it is well suited for partial and annular eclipses when mounted on appropriate optics. For a total solar eclipse, remove the filter only during totality (if present at your location) and replace it immediately when the bright solar disk reappears.
  • Is this suitable for imaging?
Yes — ND5 attenuation reduces brightness to levels appropriate for white-light solar observation and imaging when the filter is properly installed on compatible telescopes, spotting scopes, or camera lenses.
  • Does it work on cameras?
Yes — it can be used on camera lenses that fall within the specified OD range. Measure the outside of the lens barrel near the front, not the filter thread size, to select the correct slip-on filter.
