About Seymour Solar

Precision ND5 White-Light Solar Filters — Manufactured in Avon, North Carolina

Seymour Solar designs and manufactures precision ND5 white-light solar filters for telescopes, camera lenses, and binoculars. Our filters are engineered for safe, front-mounted solar viewing and imaging when used as directed. We operate as an online manufacturer and do not have a public storefront.

Our Legacy

Seymour Solar was founded in 2007 by Dr. Stephen Seymour, an astronomer and solar enthusiast committed to advancing safe solar observation. Today, in Avon, North Carolina, we continue that legacy of careful optical craftsmanship—building and inspecting each filter with attention to detail.

Our filters are used by amateur and professional observers worldwide, including in educational settings and outreach programs where safety and consistency matter.

Our Craftsmanship

Our filters use either Helios Solar Glass® or Hyperion Solar Film, designed to provide ND5 attenuation for white-light solar observing and imaging. When installed securely on the front (sun-facing) aperture of an instrument and used as directed, ND5 filtration reduces sunlight to safe levels for visual use.

  • Helios Solar Glass®: Titanium-coated optical glass with a yellow/orange solar image tone and durable handling characteristics.
  • Hyperion Solar Film: Lightweight polymer film that often appears darker and more orange, depending on the setup and camera rendering.

Filters are mounted in precision-machined aluminum cells with nylon thumb screws to help ensure a stable, secure fit. Every unit is assembled and inspected in-house for quality and safety.

Made in the USA

We’re proud to design and build our filters in the United States. From our workshop in Avon, NC, we support solar observers and photographers around the world with reliable equipment and clear, practical guidance.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: make safe solar exploration accessible—without compromising craftsmanship, clarity, or trust. We build filters that reveal white-light solar features such as sunspots and photospheric detail, and we back them with guidance that helps you use your gear correctly. Whether you’re an educator, astrophotographer, or first-time observer, we’re here to help you view and photograph the Sun safely.

Safety First

Safe solar observing depends on correct equipment and correct installation. Optical solar filters must be mounted securely on the front of the instrument before aiming at the Sun, and must be inspected before every use.

For installation and inspection guidance, see our Solar Filter Safety & Proper Use page. For clarification on standards language—especially the difference between solar viewing eyewear and optical filters—see ISO 12312-2: What It Applies To — and What It Does Not.
