About Seymour Solar
Precision ND5 White Light Filters — Handcrafted in Avon, North Carolina
Seymour Solar, LLC is an American manufacturer of precision ND5 White Light solar filters for telescopes, cameras, and binoculars. Our products are engineered for safe, front-mounted solar viewing and imaging, allowing astronomers, educators, and photographers to explore the Sun’s surface in clear, true white light.
Our Legacy
Seymour Solar was founded in 2007 by Dr. Stephen Seymour, an astronomer and solar enthusiast committed to advancing safe solar observation. Today, under new ownership in Avon, North Carolina, we continue his legacy of precision optical craftsmanship — hand-assembling every filter with care and attention to detail.
Over the years, our filters have been trusted by amateur and professional astronomers worldwide, including use in educational and research settings such as observatories and solar outreach programs.
Our Craftsmanship
Each filter is made using either Helios Solar Glass® or Hyperion Solar Film — both rated ND5 to block 99.999% of sunlight. These materials meet optical density and transmittance levels appropriate for safe front-mounted solar viewing when used as directed.
- Helios Solar Glass®: Titanium-coated optical glass for crisp, high-contrast white-light views.
- Hyperion Solar Film: Lightweight, durable polymer film ideal for travel or DIY applications.
Filters are mounted in precision-machined aluminum cells with nylon thumb screws to ensure a stable, secure fit. Every unit is assembled and inspected in-house for quality and safety.
Made in the USA
We’re proud to design and build our filters in the United States. From our workshop in Avon, NC — surrounded by the Outer Banks’ coastal beauty — we combine local craftsmanship with international reach, shipping our products to solar observers and photographers around the world.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: to empower safe solar exploration by providing reliable, high-quality filters that reveal the Sun’s features — sunspots, granulation, and eclipses — with exceptional clarity. Whether you’re an educator, astrophotographer, or first-time observer, Seymour Solar is here to make your experience safe, enjoyable, and inspiring.
