Using Hyperion Solar Thin Film

Seymour Solar | Using Hyperion Solar Thin Film

Thank you for choosing Seymour Solar Hyperion Solar Film. This premium solar-viewing material is safe for direct observation of the Sun when used properly and provides a clear, high-contrast yellow-orange solar image.

Product Overview

Hyperion Solar Film allows only 0.001% of sunlight to pass through (Neutral Density 5). It blocks 99.999% of visible light, including harmful ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation. The material is 0.002" thick, durable, and easy to work with. Only one layer is needed for safe use.

How to Use

  • Inspect the film for holes, tears, or loose cell attachments before use. Replace if damaged.
  • Secure the film firmly to the front (sky end) of your telescope, binoculars, camera, or viewing device.
  • Use tape or fasteners to ensure the filter cell stays secure in windy conditions.
  • Never use the film at the eyepiece or anywhere in the optical path — it must always be placed at the front aperture.

For DIY Users

  • Hyperion Solar Film can be cut with scissors or a sharp razor to make custom eclipse viewers or front-mounted filters.
  • Only one layer is required for safe solar viewing.
  • For 8" or larger Newtonian or Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, build an off-axis filter to reduce thermal currents and improve image quality.

Safety Precautions

  • Inspect before every use for pinholes, tears, or delamination.
  • Ensure a secure fit — tape or clamp the filter to avoid accidental removal.
  • Cover or filter the viewfinder of your telescope.
  • Never leave the instrument unattended when pointed at the Sun.
  • Emphasize safety to others, especially children and first-time observers.

Cleaning & Care

Handle gently to avoid punctures. Store in a cool, dry place away from sharp objects or excessive heat. Replace immediately if the material becomes creased or damaged.
